South Union Park, Singapore — Kembangan

South Union Park, Singapore — Kembangan

South Union Park (SUP) is now serving breakfast on weekends from 9am to 12pm. Chef Terence seeks to serve a comforting breakfast spread unlike your usual cafe brunch menu so you won’t be finding that eggs benedict on the menu. SUP takes pride in making most of its ingredients from scratch and it was clearly displayed in the quality of food that we were served with.

Here’s what we had:

The tarte flambe is similar to a pizza — bacon, roasted mushrooms, leek onion and cheese on a thin crispy “cracker”. I liked the sweetness of the leeks and juicy texture of the mushrooms on the layer of melted creamy cheese, though it might not be exactly something I want for breakfast. The nicely divided portions is good for sharing so it can be an “appetizer” course for your meal.

Knowing that customers might not want to have raw sashimi during the first meal of the day, Chef Terence lightly cured the chunks of salmon to give it a subtle  taste so that we can still taste its freshness (definitely not those overly salty ones). Of course, the bread is freshly baked in-house and it’s soft and fluffy on the inside. Toast, a layer of egg dill mayonnaise then topped with chunks of salmon with pickled cucumber and red onions, it’s the perfect way to kickstart your weekend on a refreshing note.

Easily one of the most value-for-money big breakfast around, the SUPer breakfast is made with lots of love. Muffins, tater tots, sausage patties, eggs and strawberry jam — the ingredients may sound common to all but it taste different when most of it are made from scratch. The tater tots are one of the most amazing ones i’ve had. It took the crew several R&D rounds to perfect it — creamy smooth potato on the inside with a perfect ring of crispy skin on the outside. The house-baked muffins and handmade sausage patties were excellent too. All these for $15 (no gst and service charge!)? I’m sold.

The french toast might be your choice if you’ve a sweet tooth. Brioche dipped in an egg wash then pan fried to a golden brown and served with caramelised apple and crispy bacon. We might have been too greedy with the organic maple syrup so it was a little too sweet for me and the toast became soggy. Do keep an eye on the syrup since they are quite generous with the serving!

Even though SUP may not be as conveniently located, it is well worth a trip to check out its menu. How often can we find a restaurant exploring ways to prepare ingredients from scratch and dishing out plates that truly represents the heart and soul of the chef? Now, I can’t wait to be back to check out their lunch/dinner menu!
